I may earn a small commission or products from the companies mentioned in this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Currently, the FDA has banned only 11 ingredients for use in cosmetics. In Europe, 1,328 ingredients are banned and deemed unsafe for consumer use. (Read the full list here)

“Unsafe” means they are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects.

Some of these ingredients banned in Europe include Parabens, Synthetic fragrance, Phthalates, Sodium laurel sulfate, Triclosan (now banned in the US!) Petroleum, Formaldehyde, and Talc. Read the label on any common, over the counter skincare product found on drugstore shelves and you will find these ingredients in abundance!

As far as sunscreen ingredients, Europe has banned Titanium and Avobenzone.

What do I do about this? And what do I use?

Thankfully, in the US we have The Environmental Working Group, or EWG, serving as watchdogs for ingredients that are both harmful to humans and to our planet. They have a database called Skin Deep in which you can look up any product that you are currently using and see their rating of it. Click here to see!

Stay tuned in the coming week to see my picks for cleaner versions of your every day products such as deodorant, toothpaste and body wash!

Thanks for stopping by! XOXO, Ashli
