I am so excited to share with you my chat with Dr. Greg Altman, Ph.D, CEO and Co-Founder of Silk Therapeutics. I had the opportunity to speak one on one with Greg, Rachel Dow, their General Manager and Skincare Director as well as tour their lab! I can’t wait to share with you all about this amazing skincare brand!
First, a little background on Silk:
Silk Therapeutics was founded with one belief in mind: that everyone deserves skincare that’s effective, risk-free, and pure. Inspired by the courage and beauty of cancer patients and survivors, and powered by over 15 years of advanced biomedical research, they are constantly reimagining the ways we treat and protect skin. With everything they do, Silk Therapeutics strives to improve human health and wellness, and safety. Most of their products are EWG VERIFIED™ for your assurance of the gold standard in health. Currently they have 11 products in their line- A Cleanser, exfoliant (peel), hydrating serum, anti aging Vitamin C serum, anti aging firming complex, three moisturizers, an eye cream, a body cream and a professional peel! (The peel is only available to their licensed spa partners). The products are made from pure silk imported from Japan and their formulas are patented. They remove sericin, a protein in the silk that can sometimes cause an allergic reaction, to ensure the safety of the product for consumers (especially the immune compromised!) When you use it, you can know for sure that it is pure and healthy and contributes to your overall well-being!
Silk Therapeutics was founded by Dr. Greg Altman, Ph.D. and Dr. Rebecca Horan. Dr. Horan is an Ovarian Cancer Survivor, diagnosed at the age of 27. During this scary experience, she reached for products that were pure and safe- and didn’t find a lot on the market! Dr. Altman didn’t set out to create a skincare line—not exactly. He became a scientist because he wanted to improve the lives of millions of people. But, then when his wife became pregnant and tossed out all of her own skincare, (in search of products with pure ingredients) he had his “aha” moment. He knew he had an opportunity to improve health through skincare. Together, Dr’s Horan and Altman are not only providing a pure and effective product on the consumer market (which I will tell you all about in a minute!), but it’s their outreach to the community affected by cancer as well as challenged immune systems due to diseases such as HIV, and MS that impresses me the most. I often tag them in my social media as #skincarewithaheart, and I can’t wait to share what they are up to and the positive impact they are making!
“Hi Greg! Thank you SO much for taking the time to speak with me today about your amazing product line! Can you tell me what your favorite product is from the line?”
G- “That’s an easy one! Purely Smooth with Lemongrass is my favorite. I have oily skin, so this is the perfect product for me. It’s not too emollient and it has a smooth texture. It also contains lemongrass which is very calming, and great for post-shaving. If I were to create a men’s line I would- from this product!”
A- “What is your best selling product?”
G- “The Silk Renewing Peel. This is the BEST product and our top seller. It’s accessible to everyone. It’s a great first peel- great for first timers, people in their 30’s and 40’s who have never tried a peel before. It’s powerful and gentle and people are addicted! The formula actually came about when we were originally making our Purely Smooth Solution with Silk before adding the Vitamin C. We added lactic and glycolic acid to the solution and our silk peel was born!”
A- “This is my absolute favorite peel. And it is so safe! I used it all throughout my pregnancy as my exfoliant because I knew that not only were the lactic and glycolic acids safe for pregnancy but also that the product is so pure with only 5 ingredients!”
G- “That’s great!”
A- “Can you tell me a little bit more about your Vitamin C serum, the C Advance Anti Aging Intensive Serum? Does it contain Vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid or is it something else?”
G- “So, it’s actually Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbyl glucoside. The advantage to using ascorbyl glycoside as opposed to an L-ascorbic acid is the benefit of slow release. Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable molecule of Vitamin C combined with glucose. Since it is limited to a glucose molecule it is encapsulated. As the body breaks down the glucose bond it releases the L-ascorbic acid inside. We actually have a professional peel product called the Silk + C30 Film which is straight up L-ascorbic acid because we want it to release immediately on the skin. It’s a fast, high dose release of Vitamin C, whereas the Serum stays with you and continues to release throughout the day.”
A- “This is great! Now, I want to hear more about your outreach to the cancer and immune challenged community.”
G- “So, through our spa and dermatologist channel, we have been able to donate product to cancer patients with each purchase. Rather than using funds to donate to this cause, instead we elected to actually get the products into the hands of the patients. Cancer is biologically, emotionally and financially draining. It is impactful on all spectrums. We wanted to give people going through that a little perk, a little thing of beauty that is clean, safe, and makes them feel and look good! Chemotherapy challenges the immune system. We are expanding our outreach to not only those who are immune compromised due to chemo, but other communities as well as such as those with HIV, MS, and other immune disorders.”
A- “Well I am just blown away. I think this is amazing work. I know for sure that you absolutely will succeed in improving the lives of millions of people!”
